Fined for ignoring ban on fires

Arnold Lee Vail has been fined $150 after pleading guilty to starting a fire on a day when all counties in the province were closed to burning. Department of Natural Resources officers were on routine patrol about 7 p.m. on the day in question when they noticed dark smoke in the sky, Crown prosecutor Catherine McNally told provincial court. They discovered a fire, about three metres by three metres in size, she said. A section of grass about five metres long had been burned, and the wind was blowing toward nearby woods, said McNally. It took 15 pails of water to put the fire out. Vail told the officers he had started the fire about 6:15 p.m. using barbecue lighter. He was getting rid of old construction materials.

Man punished for probation violation

Ryan Daniel Nelson has been fined $200 after pleading guilty to failing to comply with a probation order. Nelson, 20, of Michael Crescent, failed to report to a probation officer on March 19, the provincial court heard. He was initially supposed to meet with the officer on Dec. 4, but didn't show up. The officer left several voice mail messages and finally, on March 3, sent Nelson a letter directing him to attend a meeting on the 18th, but he didn't. Nelson was also ordered to pay a $30 victim fine surcharge.

Community service shirker pays

Robert Anthony Keleher was supposed to complete 50 hours of community service as part of his sentence in December, 2007. But he didn't. Now, the 22-year-old Wright Street resident still has to complete the 50 hours, plus he's been handed a suspended sentence and placed on probation for nine months. Keleher was also ordered to keep the peace and be of good behaviour, maintain his employment and follow up on the GED program.

Drunk loses driver's licence

Serge Leger, 33, of Dresden Avenue, has been fined $750 and prohibited from driving for one year after changing his plea to guilty of failing a breathalyser. On June 22, about 2:30 a.m., police were on routine patrol on Rothesay Avenue when the Chevy in front of them swerved out of the lane and hit the curb. Leger had a breathalyser reading of 110 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 mg. Leger was also ordered to pay a $112.50 victim fine surcharge.
