Areva quarterly sales rise on nuclear plant orders
PARIS - Areva SA, the world's largest nuclear reactor builder, said second-quarter sales advanced 17 per cent on nuclear power plant projects. Revenue rose to 3.4 billion euros (US$5.3 billion) from 2.9 billion a year earlier, the Paris-based company said Thursday in a statement. The backlog of orders gained 14 per cent to 38.1 billion euros in the 12 months to June 30. Areva said it confirms its full-year targets of "strong growth'' in backlog and in sales revenue.

Air Canada aims to boost revenues with partnership
MONTREAL - Air Canada expects to boost its access to the New York area and gain much-needed revenues to offset rising fuel costs by partnering with Continental Airlines, the fourth-largest U.S. carrier. Canada's largest airline announced Thursday it has signed an agreement in principle that will provide customers a broader network of destinations, frequent flyer benefits and lounge access. Air Canada already has an agreement with United Airlines.

TD economist named to labour advisory panel
OTTAWA - TD Bank chief economist Don Drummond, left, will chair an advisory panel on labour market information that will report to federal and provincial governments. Federal Human Resources Minister Monte Solberg said the five-member panel will advise governments on how timely assessments and information on the future needs of employees and workers can improve economic activity. The panel is expected to report back by the spring of 2009.
