TORONTO - A Canadian reality show in which young people sparred over political issues has been nominated for an international Emmy.

CBC-TV's Canada's Next Great Prime Minister was the only Canadian show to get a nomination, and faces off against programs from the Netherlands, Argentina and Japan in the category of "non-scripted entertainment."

The nominees were announced Monday by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

Forty nominations were handed out, with eight going to British shows.

Shows from Brazil earned five nominations, while shows from Argentina and Japan took four nods and shows from China and Denmark got three.

The winners will be announced Nov. 24 in New York.

Canada's Next Great Prime Minister was hosted by comedian Rick Mercer and featured a judges panel of former prime ministers including Paul Martin, Kim Campbell and John Turner, as wells as Newfoundland Premier Danny Williams.

It's up against The Big Donor Show out of the Netherlands, a controversial show in which people competed to get a donor kidney from a supposedly terminally ill woman.

The program created outrage when it was revealed the show was a hoax - the donor was an actress and the premise was concocted as part of an awareness campaign for organ donation.

Canada's Next Great Prime Minister is also up against Argentina's Caiga quien caiga, a comical current affairs show, and Doors by Tokyo Broadcasting System of Japan.
