* Mount Allison Symposium celebrates Messiaen Centennial, beginning today at 4 p.m. and running until Oct. 19 in Sackville. The series includes concerts, talks, lecture-recitals and films featuring Mount A faculty, students and guests. All lectures and daytime events are free and open to the public. * An open house for the Thistle St. Andrews Curling Club takes place from 2 to 4 p.m. or 6 to 8 p.m. on 49 Dufferin Ave. Meet and greet representatives from all leagues and mini clinics. Drop in and see what curling is all about. All levels and ages welcome. Call 634-7656 for details.
* Imperial Theatre, 24 King Square South in Saint John, presents the hit muscial comedy Nunsense starring Sally Sruthers at 8 p.m. Single Ticket Prices are $60, $50 and $40. Youth 18 and under pay $40. Call 674-4100 for details.
* A public lecture "Why rivers need floods" takes place at 7 p.m. in the Hazen Hall Lecture Theatre at the University of New Brunswick-Saint John, 100 Tucker Park Rd. Dr. Wolfgang Junk from the National Amazonian Research Institute will discuss what happens in the floodplains of rivers during floods, how these ecosystems can be better managed and understood, and how humans have contributed to increased flooding. The 6th annual H.B.*. Hynes Lecture, hosted by the Canadian Rivers Institute, UNB is free and open to the public. Refreshments will follow. Call 648-5809 for details.
* The Canada Games Aquatic Centre hosts an open house from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. to swim, soak in the hot tub, relax in the sauna or steam room or work out in the fitness centre. Admission is free for today only. Visit www.aquatics.nb.ca/ for details.

* October is Learning Disabilities Awareness Month and Mount Allison University in Sackville is celebrating 20 years of helping students with learning disabilities. The Meighen Centre for Learning Assistance and Research hosts a public reception at 1:30 p.m. on the third floor of the Wallace McCain Student Centre in downtown Sackville.
* Mount Allison University welcomes former Penguin Group president Cynthia Good. Good will deliver a public lecture entitled The Insiders Guide to Getting Published at 4 p.m. at Cranewood 113 Main St., Sackville. This event is free and open to all, but seating is limited so register by calling the English department (364-2543) or emailing (ccolwell@mta.ca).
* Mount Allison University in Sackville welcomes Dr. Nonie Lesaux, a learning disorders and reading development specialist, from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Lesaux's talk will take place at 4 p.m. in the Avard-Dixon building, room G-12 and is part of the 20th anniversary celebrations of the Meighen Centre for Learning Assistance and Research at Mount Allison University. A public celebration is also being held at 1:30 p.m. with champagne and cake.
* The St. Andrews Film Society is screening the documentary Down to the Sea at 8 p.m. at the W.C. O'Neill arena theatre in St. Andrews. Following the screening, there will be a discussion about the state of the fisheries some 40 years later, the progress of fisheries research and how it is conducted today. * Non-denominational Gospel services take place every week at the Bradley Lake Community Centre in Rothesay on Thursdays at 8 p.m. and also on Sundays at 4 p.m. All are welcome.
