Peter Assaff, Wayne Cormier and Michel “Chico” Doucet have been named this year’s recipients, the Rotary Club announced in a news release.

The award is “the highest form of recognition a Rotary Club can bestow,” according to the release.

“It is presented to a Rotarian or a member of the community who has made an outstanding contribution to the community.”

The 2024 recipients have made many volunteer contributions across many areas and organizations in the Chaleur region.

Assaff played a key role in getting a dialysis unit at the Chaleur Regional Hospital, and was recognized by the New Brunswick Kidney Foundation for his efforts in 1998, according to the release.

He has been a member of the local Rotary Club for more than 20 years, serving two terms as president, and is also a longtime member of the Coronation Park committee. He has also volunteered as a master of ceremonies and announcer for local groups for the last 25 years.

For more than 40 years Cormier has been a member of the Shriners, where he organized travel for children receiving treatment at the Shriners Hospitals.

He is a longtime supporter of the Rotary Travel Draw, is a member of many committees at the local United church and is a member of the Bathurst Legion.

Doucet has been a longtime volunteer in the region. He’s organized numerous humanitarian trips for students to help with projects, like establishing water wells, in developing countries around the world.

He volunteers with youth and adult sporting events in the community and has more recently played a key role in the revitalization of the Bathurst Hospitality Days festival.

The Paul Harris awards dinner will be held May 8 at Gowan Brae Golf & Country Club. A reception will be held at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m.

Tickets are available from club members or by calling the golf course pro shop.
