The West District RCMP issued a news release Saturday saying officers from the St. Stephen detachment responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash Friday at around 11:20 p.m. on Route 774 in Wilson’s Beach on the island.

“The driver of the vehicle was transported to hospital with serious injuries,” Const. Evan Elgee said in the release. “A 17-year-old passenger, and the only other occupant of the vehicle, died at the scene as a result of his injuries.”

Elgee said the cause of the crash remains under investigation. He said members of the Machias Emergency Health Service in Maine, the Campobello Fire Department, and Ambulance New Brunswick staff also responded to the scene. A member of the New Brunswick Coroner’s Office is helping with the ongoing investigation.

Police didn’t identify the victim. Elgee said an autopsy will be conducted to determine the boy’s exact cause of death.
