In a media release Tuesday, police report it was approximately 1 p.m. Sunday when a patrol officer saw a man stumbling out onto Thorne Avenue. The officer approached the man and learned he had been assaulted with a chemical irritant.

Additional officers arrived and found a woman at a nearby encampment where police believe the incident took place. The woman had also been sprayed with the irritant.

“It is believed that they were both contaminated during the same incident and that the suspects were known to the victims,” police stated in the release.

Both individuals were treated by paramedics at the scene and then taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Major Crime Unit is investigating and investigators are appealing for witnesses or anyone in the area that has video surveillance or cell phone video of the incident at the time it occurred.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Saint John Police Force at 1-506-648-3333, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or 1-800-222-T.I.P.S.
