Jays hire another familiar face
TORONTO - The Toronto Blue Jays are turning to a familiar face to be their interim chief executive officer - Paul Beeston. The man who helped build the team from its inception in 1977 en route to a pair of World Series championships will assume responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the baseball club and Rogers Centre effective immediately. Beeston will be supported by outgoing president and CEO Paul Godfrey, who will remain with the team until the end of the year. Beeston said he's looking forward to finding a full-time chief executive officer. Godfrey announced last month that he would be stepping down after eight years on the job.

Former pitcher dies of cancer
CHICAGO - Kevin Foster, who spent seven years in the major leagues after breaking in as an infielder and converting to a pitcher, has died of cancer. He was 39. He died in an Oklahoma City hospital Saturday after a six-month bout with renal cell carcinoma, brother Mark Foster said. Foster was selected by the Montreal Expos in the 29th round of the 1987 amateur draft. The right-hander was traded to Seattle and then Philadelphia. He entered the majors in 1993 with the Phillies. Foster spent five seasons with the Chicago Cubs after being acquired from Philadelphia for Shawn Boskie in 1994, going 32-28 from 1994-98.

Yankees axe two coaches
NEW YORK - Third-base coach Bobby Meacham and special pitching instructor Rich Monteleone were fired Tuesday by the New York Yankees. Meacham spent six seasons as a player with the Yankees and was hired last November when Joe Girardi replaced Joe Torre as manager. Meacham had been Girardi's third-base coach with Florida in 2006, then was first-base coach with San Diego in 2007. Monteleone had been a pitching instructor the past four seasons after spending from 2002-04 as bullpen coach.

Chief charged with assault
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson has been charged with simple assault for allegedly pushing a woman at a Kansas City nightclub in February, the third time he has faced assault charges against a woman. Johnson, 28, was charged last month for a Feb. 24 incident at the Grand Emporium Saloon. A 26-year-old woman accused Johnson of pushing the side of her head with an open hand, telling her "don't touch me" as he made his way through the club. Johnson is due to appear in Kansas City Municipal Court on Dec. 3 and faces a maximum jail term of six months and a US$500 fine.

Eight killed in bus crash
LIMA, Peru - A bus carrying a second-division Peruvian soccer team has fallen 200 metres down a ravine, killing eight people and injuring 22. Peru's Andina state news agency reports that highway robbers forced the bus driver out of his seat at gunpoint on Monday. The brakes came loose and the bus rolled off the cliff. Three of the dead and most of the injured are members of the San Cayetano soccer club from the northern city of Celendin. Two of the team's owners also died. The team was returning from a game it lost 10-0.

Cowboys acquire wide receiver
IRVING, Texas - The Dallas Cowboys have acquired wide receiver Roy Williams from the Detroit Lions. The Cowboys gave up a first-round pick in 2009 in Tuesday's deal. They also gave up a third-rounder, sixth-rounder and seventh-round pick next year. Williams' best season was 2006, when he went to the Pro Bowl after catching 82 passes for 1,310 yards and seven touchdowns. He has 17 catches for 232 yards and a score this season for the winless Lions. The fifth-year receiver was drafted in the first round by Detroit out of the University of Texas. He has 262 career catches for 3,884 yards with 29 touchdowns.
