This will be the second year to have the festivities at the corner of Main and Highfield Streets, directly in front of the Avenir Centre. Last year’s celebration was held in conjunction with the World Junior Hockey Championships and drew a large crowd.

The city said the Dec. 31 festivities will include live music by the Mellotones and Beauxmont.  There will be a family fireworks show at 8:30 p.m., and another at midnight with a new year’s countdown.

“We’re thrilled to bring the second annual event to Moncton, building on the success of last year’s celebrations,” Shane Esson, co-chair of the New Year’s Eve Family Fun Fest organizing committee, said in a news release.

“The inaugural event last year was planned as part of the community celebrations around the IIHF World Junior Championship,” said Bill Whalen, co-chair of Events Moncton. “It is a great example of the community legacy some of these bigger events can bring. We’re excited to see this terrific celebration added to the many annual events that help make Moncton a great place to visit and to call home.”

Here’s what is on the schedule for Dec. 31 at the Avenir Centre:

  • 2 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.: Family friendly activities and live performances on the stage at the Ian Fowler Oval.
  • 2 p.m. to midnight: Food trucks including Shangrilla, Mamma K’s, and the Cavendish Fry Truck.
  • Fundraiser barbecue for the United Way.
  • The Crown Plaza, Hilton Garden Inn, and Hyatt Place hotels near the Avenir Centre will each have ice bars, offering unique selection of cocktails in a relaxed atmosphere.
  • 4 p.m.: Moncton Wildcats against the Charlottetown Islanders at the Avenir Centre.
  • 6 p.m. to midnight: Beer garden open.
  • 8:30 p.m.: Family fireworks display.
  • 8:45 p.m. to midnight: Live concert with performances by Beauxmont and The Mellotones.
  • Midnight: New Year’s fireworks show.
