Hubcity Theatre said in a news release that the troupe began working on producing the play during COVID-19 lockdowns.

The Vagina Monologues is described as a landmark play that explores many themes including consensual and non-consensual sex, body image, genital mutilation, menstruation, prostitution and violence against women. It was written by women’s activist V (formerly known as Eve Ensler), based on interviews she did with many women and men who told their own stories.

Hubcity Theatre said Chilean director Nery Valenzuela hopes the show will inform and inspire audiences familiar with the works and those who may be experiencing it for the first time.

“This play allows us to realize the shifts that have occurred regarding topics that were once
considered taboo or forbidden,” Valenzuela said in the news release. “We aim to present a fresh approach where I seek not only to entertain the audience and provide an enjoyable time but also to offer them a thought-provoking conversation topic to take home.”

The play explores sexual experiences along with abuse such as human trafficking as seen through the eyes of women and men of various ages, races and sexualities. The play blends humour, sadness, anger and regret.

“We tried to produce this show several times in the midst of COVID lockdowns. Every time
restrictions were lifted and we planned to put it on, things would shut down again,” said Kelly MacDonald-Mason, a cast member and chairperson of the Hubcity board of directors.

“So we put it down for a few years and decided it was the time to pick it up again. We are so
happy to be producing this work which will make you laugh, cry and reflect.”

Due to the mature nature of this show, the producers suggest it is suitable for those 13 years old and above, with parental discretion.

The show is being staged at the Aberdeen Cultural Centre on Feb. 16 and 17 at 7.30 pm.
Tickets cost $25 and are available through eventbrite.
