The Community Grocers’ Holiday Turkey Drive was launched last week with a goal of collecting 2,000 turkeys to feed 6,000 people in need during the Christmas season.

The drive runs through Dec. 4 and is hosted in partnership with Victory Meat Market, Peters Meat Market, St. Mary’s Supermarket, the Fredericton Direct Charge Co-op, and the Fredericton Firefighters’ Association. Firefighters will be on hand Dec. 2 to collect donations.

“Food insecurity is a larger issue than ever in our community,” Victory said in a post on its Facebook page.

Last year’s drive set a new fundraising record of $63,077, which was enough to purchase 1,802 turkeys at $35 each.

In previous years, Victory and Peters competed for a turkey trophy and north-side-south-side bragging rights, with Victory leading the competition 3-2. The two businesses began working together last year.

Donations are being accepted at participating businesses until the drive ends. Every $35 raised buys a turkey for a family in need.
