Police force spokesperson Sonya Gilks said emergency crews responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash at around 10:30 a.m. on Route 8 at the south end of the bridge, near the Forest Hill Road interchange.

“The adult male driver was arrested, transported to the hospital with minor injuries, and later released,” Gilks said Monday in an emailed statement. “The police investigation into a possible impairment is ongoing.”

Fredericton Fire Department assistant deputy chief Dave McKinley said the crash was originally reported to firefighters as a vehicle that went off the bridge. He said the department responded with multiple units, including ice rescue equipment, but it was found to be a vehicle that went over an embankment and wasn’t near the St. John River.

“Upon our arrival, the two occupants had exited the vehicle and were walking up the hill,” McKinley said in an emailed statement. “They were assessed by Ambulance New Brunswick.”

McKinley said firefighters were on scene for about 40 minutes and ensured the vehicle was stable enough to be removed after the police investigation.

Gilks said the police investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
