Department of Transportation and Infrastructure spokesperson Tyler McLean said work on replacing the Nashwaak River No. 5 Bridge on Route 148 in Taymouth is expected to start in 2025 and be finished in 2027.

“Earlier this fall, the bridge was resurfaced to provide a better drive until the bridge is replaced,” McLean said in an emailed statement. “Details regarding cost estimates and construction timelines will not be available until a pre-design report is complete in the new year.”

The bridge at the corner of Route 148 and Nashwaak Road was built in 1947. It was reduced to one lane about three years ago, with traffic lights at each end and orange reflectors directing traffic toward the middle of the roadway.

Its weight limit has also been reduced to 25 tonnes.

McLean said the bridge replacement is part of DTI’s three-year capital program for 2025-26.

The Taymouth bridge replacement is among several bridge projects on the Nashwaak in recent years. Others have included an ongoing upgrade of Nashwaak River No. 2 Bridge in Marysville, the removal of Nashwaak River No. 3 Bridge in Penniac, and an overhaul on the Nashwaak River No. 1 Bridge at Barkers Point about a decade ago.

The last bridge replacement on the Nashwaak was in 2010 at Durham Bridge, when an aging steel span was replaced with a modular one at Nashwaak River No. 4 Bridge.
