Police issued a public callout to find the culprit behind a recent act of vandalism, hoping the “distinctive” tag might give the spray-painter away.

The graffiti – one tag that spells out “Waive” – was painted on the side of George Street Middle School in downtown Fredericton last Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning, police say.

The graffiti ‘tag’ is distinctive, so we’re hoping tips from the public may help us identify the person (s) responsible,” Fredericton police spokesperson Sonya Gilks said in an email.

Graffiti has exploded in the city in recent years. According to the force’s 2022 annual report, the most recent one posted, police received 520 calls for mischief/property damage that year, compared to 363 the year previous and 306 in 2020.

Last year saw some high-profile graffiti cases, including two cemeteries targeted by vandals, who painted slurs on headstones. Other cemeteries outside the city were also targeted.
