The crowds were large and the prices and steer were top quality as the 71st annual event took place at the Northern Carleton Civic Centre.

In a post on social media, Spring Show and Sale president Laurie Findlater said this year’s show was “one for the books.”

“A lot of work goes into this show, but I love it and this year did not disappoint,” she wrote.

The 71st annual event featured 39 exhibitors and set a record average of $8.53 per pound and had a total gross of about $399,807.

The amount broke last year’s record of $8.20 per pound, with a total gross of about $256,180.

The annual event is steeped in tradition. For siblings Clair and Curtis Anderson, the show was a true family affair.

The 11- and 13-year-old duo showed their steer in individual events and in the best pair category. Not to be outdone, they cheered on their father Ryan as he participated in the alumni showmanship event.

“It is a lot of fun,” Olivia said. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s worth it.”

“We both love it,” Curtis said. “Olivia spends way more time in the barn than I do, but we are there three hours a day or more.”

4-H member Owen Crandlemire said he works alongside his grandfather to get ready for the event.

“I heard about 4H from my friends, and since my grandfather has a beef farm it made sense to join,” he said. “My grandfather has been a big help and it’s a lot of fun and it is a lot of hard work.”

This year’s grand champion was awarded to River Valley 4H member Bryson Longstaff of Mile-Lane Polled Herefords. Longstaff, and his steer Louis, also claimed the champion 4H animal and champion Hereford animal titles.

Reserve grand champion honours went to McAffee Farms Ltd., which has been participating in the event for over 30 years.

“Overall it was a great success, and we can’t wait to get started on planning for next year,” Findlater said.
