RCMP Sgt. Dan Sharpe said police received a call on March 8 at about 1 p.m. from the U.S. Border Patrol about three individuals heading for the international border on foot.

Sharpe said the trio fled into a wooded area and police were able to track them down about 40 minutes later using police dog services.

He said the suspects told police they used a ride share app to rent a vehicle in New York, which they abandoned near the U.S. border before walking into Canada.

Canada Border Service Agency spokesperson Rebecca Purdy say the group was taken to the Woodstock port of entry for processing and further investigation.

Purdy said the two men and one woman appeared in Woodstock Provincial Court on March 9.

Narghita Cioroaba, 43, Eduard Ilie Scriparu, 40, and and Dorel Bambi Istrate, 42, were charged under Section 18 (1) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for failing to present themselves for examination.

There’s been an increase in illegal border activity in recent years and police are asking anyone who sees suspicious activity near border areas to contact them.
