City has full slate of festivals this summer

This year's events in Moncton include the 80th anniversary of D-Day and a Harley Owners Group Rally

Moncton city council on Monday approved street closures and noise bylaw exemptions for a slate of special events planned for the downtown area in May through August.

The exemptions allow event organizers and city staff to block off sections of streets to traffic so events can be carried out safely. Most public events are held in the Riverfront Park along Assomption Boulevard.

This summer’s events include a celebration to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in France during the Second World War, and a Harley-Davidson motorcycle owner’s group rally.

Here’s a list of events for May through August:

• May 5: Shoppers Drug Mart Run for Women, Centennial Park.

• May 25-26: Greater Moncton Dragon Boat Festival Practice, Jones Lake.

• May 31-June 1: Greater Moncton Dragon Boat Festival, Jones Lake.

• June 4-6: Moncton’s Victoria Park will be used for an 80th Anniversary of D-Day National Event, including a 19-gun salute at sunset on June 5.

• Acoustica Summer Entertainment Series: Various dates in June, July, and August.

• June 14-15: Greater Moncton Highland Games and Scottish Festival, Assomption Boulevard.

• June 20-23: Rotary Ribfest, in the parking lot on Assomption Boulevard across from the law courts.

• July 1: Canada Day Celebrations, Assomption Boulevard.

• July 4-7: Atlantic Nationals Automotive Extravaganza. Main Street and Centennial Park. A section of Main Street near city hall will be completely closed on Friday, July 5 for the annual downtown street party.

• July 12-14: Moncton Buskers Festival, Riverfront Park.

• Aug. 8-11: Chocolate River Regional H.O.G. (Harley Owners Group) Rally, Century Drive and Canada Street at the Avenir Centre.

• Aug. 14-16: Acadie Rock Festival and Tintamarre.
