The city said in a news release Monday that it is on the way to setting a new record for construction in 2023. The final tabulation for the year is usually released in mid-January.

“Over 500 permits have been issued since the beginning of the year, representing a total investment of almost $150 million and surpassing the most recent record of $119.4 million set in 2022,” the news release said. “As of Oct. 31, the municipality had authorized 120 permits for commercial, industrial and institutional projects worth approximately $50.6 million, in addition to 387 permits for residential projects worth $99.3 million.”

Mayor Yvon Lapierre said the amount of construction demonstrates the city’s economic vitality.

By investing responsibly in our infrastructure, we’re creating the right environment for the growth that makes Dieppe such a great place to live, work and raise a family. We’re once again in an excellent position to address the region’s housing shortage and become Atlantic Canada’s destination of choice for francophone immigration, Lapierre said.

“Our recent housing needs assessment shows that between 3,500 and 4,400 new units will be required in Dieppe by 2033,” says Alexandre Girard, Dieppe’s director of planning and development. “To support the municipality’s growth, which is the result of well-planned development, we will continue to focus on taking measures that address our housing needs and issues effectively.”

Louis Godbout, executive director of Expansion Dieppe said it is important that the city have a balance of residential, commercial and industrial growth.
