Prior to their move to Moncton, the couple lived near Hamilton, Ont., where they say there were a lot of gay bars and LGBTQ+ events happening.

“We noticed there wasn’t a whole lot going on here, and we were like we could start something if there is a gap to fill,” said Amy.

To fill that gap, they’re launching their own queer event business Out n’ About.

On May 3, they’re hosting a launch party at the Tire Shack Brewery with a DJ, games and drinks, but they say they looking at hosting a variety of events throughout the year including a queer camping trip, karaoke nights and events for younger members of the community.

“Amy is a very adventurous planner and I’m sure she’ll come up with a lot more fun ideas,” said Christina.

The couple say they work well together, with Amy being the planner and Christina taking on the job of marketing.

“I focus on the fun and she focuses on the connection,” said Amy.

With their launch still a few weeks away, Christina said they’re already getting positive feedback online from people saying this kind of service is needed in the area.

“It makes us feel like we’re on the right track,” she said.

Christina said she and Amy understand the need for these kinds of events. She said they feel a difference walking into a local bar versus walking into a dedicated queer space.

“You just feel this sense of safety that you are able to fully express who you are,” she said.

When these spaces aren’t there, she said it can be isolating. Through Out n’ About, they want create opportunities where people can not only be themselves but also connect with others.

“There’s nothing like walking into a queer event as a queer person.” said Christina. “Feeling that instant safety and understanding, that really brings people together and creates friendships.”
