The city has awarded a five-year contract for longitudinal line painting to Four Season Sports for $50,075 plus tax per year for a total of $250,375 plus tax.

It also awarded a five-year contract to Gloucester Sealer for pavement markings costing $59,657 plus tax per year, totalling $298,284.99 plus tax over the life of the contract.

City engineer Matthew Abernethy said the line painting contract will be completed by July 15 as long as the weather co-operates. He said nighttime temperatures need to be consistently above 10 C for the work to begin.

The pavement markings contract deals with any markings that aren’t lines on the roads, including crosswalks and parking lots.

He said the completion date for that work is also July 15.

Abernethy said the five-year contracts are an attempt to “stabilize the price” of the work, but said there is an opt-out clause in the contracts after three years if the city wants to pursue other options.

Old Post Office

Coun. Stephen Brunet has requested an update on the Old Post Office restoration given the city contributed $20,000 toward the project.

“It’s such an important building on our Main Street,” Brunet said.

Deputy Mayor Michael Willett, who sits on the committee, told council the basement of the building has been cleaned, the flooring on the main floor of the building has been removed, the roof was repaired before the winter and NB Power has installed a power pole in preparation of electricity being reconnected to the building.

“Power should be back in the building within the next couple of weeks,” he said.

Fundraising efforts are also in the works, including a chase-the-ace in partnership with the Bathurst Curling Club, Willett said.

The Rotary Club of Bathurst and the Bathurst Kinsmen Club are also helping with fundraising and the project.

Once fundraising money comes in, Willett said plumbing and work to the outside of the building will be the next jobs to tackle.

“The more funds come in, the more work you’ll see going on at the building.”

For those interested in learning more about the project, Willett said the committee intends to hold open houses during the Hospitality Days festival this July.

In-camera items

Council has approved a licence agreement between East Coast Adventure Co. and the city following discussion at an in-camera session Feb. 12.

Kristin Neville made a presentation to council Feb. 5 requesting council allow her access to the canteen building at Youghall Beach for the summer season to operate an equipment rental business. At the time she told council her company would offer paddle board, kayak, spike ball and volleyball rentals.

Because the item was discussed in-camera, the details of the agreement are unknown.

Council also approved a licence agreement between the city and Edward Jackson and Tammy Marlene Hughes for an item discussed in-camera on April 2 relating to 325 Dumaresq St.

The sale of land at 905 Riverside Dr. to Gisele Legacy for $1 plus applicable tax was approved by council, after the item was discussed in-camera April 2.

Legacy is responsible for legal, subdivision and registration fees associated with the sale, the resolution states.

It says the money is to be deposited to the city’s general capital fund reserve.

Aquatic centre commission

Council passed a resolution appointing Francesco Saverio Viglione and Roxane Perron-Faulds to the committee for a second term expiring April 2025.
