Forty years after starting her career as a teacher, Eel River Crossing’’s Colette Frees has been recognized for her work with adult literacy.

She was presented a Council of the Federation Literacy Award by Premier Blaine Higgs on April 17.

Frees started out in the classroom in the early 1980s after starting a family. She taught in local schools, mostly at Ecole aux Quatres vent in Dalhousie before switching to the resource centre for students for the final five years before she briefly retired.

“That was supposed to be just before retirement, but a month after I retired, a friend mentioned the Adult Learning program and the rest is history.”

She teaches adults what’s required to either upgrade or to gain their GED.
